Wallace County, Kansas, is situated on the Colorado state line, and is the third county south of Nebraska. It is bordered on the north by Sherman County, the east by Logan County, and on the south by Greeley County. Wallace County is 30 miles square with an approximate area of nearly 584,000 acres. Established in 1868, the county was named in honor of General William H.L. Wallace, who perished during the Civil War. Today, the county includes 3 towns: Weskan, Sharon Springs, & Wallace, each of which are located along the Union Pacific Railroad line and US Highway 40. Although the county’s roots are strongly footed in agriculture, Wallace County’s history also makes it rich in heritage. Within the county one shall find the South Smoky River, markers for the Butterfield Overland Despatch, the site of the historic Fort Wallace, and Mount Sunflower – known to many as the highest point in Kansas.
