The history of Sherman County began in 1867 with the Kidder Massacre in the NE corner of the county. The county was named after a Civil War General William T. Sherman in 1873.

Point of interests are the Kuhrt Ranch which is a Bed and Breakfast for hunters and may be reserved for other gatherings. The Van Gough Sunflower painting welcomes visitors as they come into Goodland. The Queen Anne Victorian home located at 202 West 13th was built by William Ennis in 1906 and was refurbished. This house known as the Ennis-Handy House is open to the public. The southern part of the county has a beautiful spot for picnics, fishing, and camping at the Smokey Gardens. There are still
pillars standing from an old resort built in the 1920's. Sherman County
also has the highest point of Kansas which was named Mount Sunflower.
